Color correction

Such difficult subject as color correction, cannot be considered explicitly in the given manual. The given operation demands application of various commands, including Levels (Levels), Curves (Curves), Color Balance (Balance of color) and Unsharp Mask (a blur Mask). Some information can be received from following books:

  • Fraser В Production Essentials;
  • Fleishman G., Roth S. Real World Scanning and Halftones.

Here the main steps which are necessary for fulfilling for color correction are specified only:

  1. Produce monitor calibration.
  2. Open the PhotoCD-image in program Photoshop.
  3. Designate tone boundaries to define the most dark and most light areas of the image, and then mark the highest and lowest value of tone. These values should give in printing house. (The colors which are not entering into this range, will look bad at the press.)
  4. Balance color to prevent undesirable sharp races of color on the image. It is possible to correct all colors or only neutral gray areas of the image.
  5. Use command Unsharp Mask (Unsharp masking) to make the image more accurate.
  6. Make a trial print of the CMYK-image and analyze result to define exact characteristics of color.
  7. Correct the image in program Photoshop, deduce and analyze other trial print.

Output to the screen. Fulfill color correction in mode RGB. Beforehand view the image on other monitors or by means of any browser.

Printing. If you work with the scanned Image in mode CMYK all adjustment of color fulfill in this mode. For the image in which a color separation will be carried out further, the Adobe company recommends to use at first mode RGB, and then to transform the image to mode CMYK with setting of appropriate characteristics of color.

Council

Use adjusting layers for color correction that further it was possible to adjust the image with copy usage in which layers have been saved.

Trial prints

For determination of the best parameters of adjustment it would be quite good to make a trial print in mode CMYK. Use the test image CMYK named Ole No Moire (in a file Testpict.jpg for Windows) which for these purposes is given by program Photoshop. It is on a compact disk in folder Goodies/Calibrate. However, before to open test image, in dialog box Color Settings (color Characteristic) in the field Profile Mismatches (Mismatch of a profile) install flag Ask Before Opening (to Ask before discovery). Now open the image. If there will be notifying window Missing Profile (the Profile misses), click by button Leave as is (to Leave as is), that is do not change color, and click by the button APPRX.
