To the present version in Photoshop not enough attention was given to operation with the text. To it there were many reasons — absence of interactive editing, text rasterization at the press and so forth the New version allows to work with the text as effectively, as well as in illustration programs.

The text in the modern programs is defined by the codes of characters making it and the form of these characters (font). Font characters, as well as normal circuits, are described математически. Thus, the font is a program in which descriptions of the form of characters contain. There is a large quantity of fonts.

When you add the text in the image, font characters растрируются, it is obvious at magnification. However the program stores the information on circuits of characters and you can print them in a vectorial type on the PostScript-printer, or save a file in format PDF or EPS without text rasterization. Besides, at scaling and other transformations circuits of characters settle up anew. Thus, by means of the program on the press receive the vectorial text with the maximum resolution. You can not only create effective titles, but also place in the document the text of article typed by a small size — i.e. practically to impose one-page documents with a drawing considerable quantity, using only Photoshop, without export of images to the imposition program.

The text for examples of this chapter is typed in English to uncover all possibilities of the program. Russian support in Photoshop very incomplete, fonts of some widespread formats are not supported generally, names of layers form incorrectly and etc. Therefore if we used Russian letters chapter would consist in the core of remarks and comments for examples.

For text creation tool Type (Text) is used. With its help it is possible to receive the text of two types:

• Curly (Point type). Allows to type one or several lines of the text with any parameters (attributes). It is applied normally to logos, titles and other small fragments of the text.
• Idle time (Paragraph type). Allows to install the size of the container for a dial-up. In process of filling with the text of lines, it is automatically arranged, forming a column of the given width. In this case any possible formatting in the program, i.e. the job of attributes is applied. This text type is suitable for a dial-up of notices, articles and so forth

Tool Type (Text) by operation creates a special text layer on which the entered text is allocated. The layer can set effects, to distort it as normal. However the text layer has special characteristics. At first, some commands to it are inapplicable. Secondly, the text remains edited, i.e. you can change its parameters — a font. The size of characters, etc. Practically, a text layer in Photoshop is similar to text object in illustration programs.

By means of tool Type (Text) create also the text-mask on a circuit of entered characters. In this mode the special text layer, and normal selection in a current layer of the image is formed not.

The curly text allows to type one or several lines with any formatting (a size, leading, character width, kerning, an outline, alignment). Thus normally type logos, titles and other small fragments of the text.

1. Open document Relief.psd created in chapter 4. Delete layer Car to release a place for the text,

2. Select tool Type (Text). In a property bar (fig. 7.1) parameters for the created text are set. Afterwards they can be changed, as the program and upon termination of text entering stores the data about characters and paragraphs. The pair of buttons in the left part of a property bar defines a mode of creation of characters. Activate mode Create New Text Layer (to Create a new text layer).

3. Clicking in the field of color in a property bar, select from window Color Picker (a color Choice) bright yellow color. Leave remaining default arguments.

4. Click on the image. In a palette of layers there was a text layer, and in a click point there was a text cursor.

5. Type the text "Tour Agency". You created a text layer with the curly text which is normally used for titles (fig. 7.2). By default the layer title corresponds to the gated in text, however this name can be changed arbitrarily that does not affect the text. The font and the size of the text which has turned out at you depend on setting.

6. To begin a new line, push ENTER key. Type one more word - "CONTINENTAL".

7. For end of operation with a text layer use the button with a birdie in the right part of a property bar or pass to other tool.

8. Again select tool Type (Text). Click on a text layer in a palette, or on a line of the text in a document window. There was a text cursor, you passed to editing of a text layer Delete a word "CONTINENTAL" and instead of it write "Europe Line" (fig. 7.3).

The plain text dial-up is preceded by container creation in which limits it will be allocated.

1. Install tool Type (Text) on the image. Push the mouse button and drag the cursor.

2. Release the button, and the container for the text will be created (fig. 7.4). There was a text cursor in the beginning of the first line.

3. Type any text. Observe, how the text automatically passes to the next line in process of filling of the previous.

4. Complete operation with the given layer, and then again pass to its editing.

In the program at text creation its orientation — horizontal or vertical can be set. The vertical text too can be curly and simple.

1. Activate tool Type (Text). In a property bar for an orientation choice there is a pair of buttons (fig. 7.1 see). Horizontal orientation is By default set.

2. Push the button of the vertical text.

3. Click on the image and begin a dial-up. Characters are allocated one under another, forming columns instead of lines. If such text contains some lines, the first of them is allocated in the extreme right position, new lines are formed at the left (fig. 7.5).

Orientation set and for an existing text layer.

1. Activate the created layer with the vertical text, clicking on it the selection tool. Select command Type (Text) of menu Layer (Layer).

2. In the opened list there is an orientation switch. At present switch Vertical position (Vertical) is active. Click at line Horizontal (Horizontal), and the text becomes horizontal. Probably and reverse transformation.

3. Delete the created text layer.

Both simple, and the curly text can be considered as a layer of the image with restricted possibilities of editing.

1. Create the new document with a white background layer. Give to a background filling by a texture with the big transparency. Place in the document as layers a tie-butterfly and hours from a file Things.jpg. Give to the created layers drop shadows.

2. Type the curly text "Adobe Photoshop", dividing words carriage return. Name layer Point Text (fig. 7.6). Experiment with change of position of a layer in a pile of layers of the document.

3. Select tool Move (Relocation) and then command Free Transform (the Free transformation) menu Edit (Editing). Scale, move and distort object how it became for all other cases of interactive transformation (fig. 7.7). Note that function of the free distortion and perspective does not work. All transformations what you produced with the curly text, are accessible and to the simple.

4. For a text layer set a bevel or other suitable effects (they will work and for the plain text).

The text layer can set a mode of superimposing and a transparency, and also filling by working color by means of keyboard abbreviation Alt + +Backspace.
